By the date 2nd July 2025, the payment started for the month of July Old Age Pensions, being announced by SASSA. Monthly grant of R2,315 is the main source of income for aged people who have survived through social indemnity in circumstances that would otherwise qualify them for early retirement.
Who Qualifies for Old Age Grant by SASSA?
The Old Age Grant is given to any South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee who is aged 60 years or more, has not been provided with any social grant (with the exception of Grant-in-Aid from SASSA, wherever necessary), is earning anything below the income ceiling (initially R92,520 per annum for singles), and is residing in any subsidized government institution (e.g., Government subsidized old-age homes).
The applicant is assessed on means test both for income and assets before being declared eligible.
Payment Amounts as of July 2025
From April 2025, the grant amount was incremented, so that by July 2025, the amount is:
- R2,315 per month for those aged 60–74.
- R2,335 per month for persons aged 75 and above.
This was increased to assist pensioners with the increasing cost of living due to inflation and also to ensure basic living standards.
Where and How to Collect Your Grant
Beneficiaries may get their pay through several avenues:
- Bank transfers (secure and preferred option)
- Cash Pay Points (for cash transactions only, on some specific scheduled days)
- Retail outlets such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, and Checkers
- SASSA Gold Card cash withdrawals at ATMs
SASSA further advises that grant recipients should not rush to withdraw their money on the first day of payment, as the money will stay in their accounts until needed.
